Land's End to Cape Cornwall out and back

Land’s End to Cape Cornwall Trail Run – A Wild Coastal Running Route in Cornwall

If you're looking for a trail run that delivers epic coastal views, challenging terrain, and a strong sense of connection to Cornwall’s wild landscape, the out-and-back Land’s End to Cape Cornwall trail run ticks every box. This ~20 km trail run is a highlight of our Cornwall Trail Running Retreats, offering a raw and rewarding experience at the very edge of the UK.

Trail Running the Land’s End to Cape Cornwall Route

The route follows part of the South West Coast Path, one of the most iconic long-distance trails in the UK. Starting from Land’s End, Britain’s most south-westerly point, the trail heads north along the granite cliffs of Penwith, tracing the rugged Atlantic coastline all the way to Cape Cornwall. The terrain is remote, exposed, and breathtakingly beautiful.

Expect rolling headlands, crashing surf below, and a real sense of being on the edge of the world on this unforgettable trail run from Land’s End to Cape Cornwall.

Distance, Terrain, and Elevation of the Trail Run

  • Distance: Approx. 20 km (12.5 miles)
  • Route: Out and back
  • Elevation gain: Around 500–600 metres
  • Surface: Mixed terrain including coastal path, rocky singletrack, grassy climbs, and technical descents

This route is pretty fast by South West coastal path standards — and it’s full of character. There are steep ascents and descents, sections of rocky technical trail, and narrow cliffside paths that demand focus and good footing. But for trail runners who enjoy a challenge and want to truly immerse themselves in nature, it’s pure joy.

Land’s End to Sennen Cove – First Stretch of the Trail

From the start at Land’s End, the trail quickly becomes remote and dramatic. You’ll be running with the Atlantic to your left and the wild Cornish cliffs underfoot. Early on, you’ll tackle a few sharp climbs and descents before dropping down into Sennen Cove, a charming surf village and one of the few flatter stretches of the day.

Sennen is a great place to catch your breath, take a few photos, or top up water if needed.

Sennen to Cape Cornwall – The Midpoint of the Trail Run

As you leave Sennen behind, the trail becomes wilder. The coast path rises and falls with the contours of the cliffs, and the views become even more expansive. You’ll pass Porth Nanven and the ancient mining remnants of Kenidjack Valley before reaching Cape Cornwall — a headland where the Atlantic splits into the Celtic Sea and the English Channel.

Cape Cornwall is marked by a striking chimney stack from the mining era and sweeping views of the ocean. It’s a perfect turnaround point for this out-and-back trail run.

Returning from Cape Cornwall to Land’s End

What makes this Land’s End to Cape Cornwall trail run even more special is the return journey. The direction of light changes everything — views that passed you by the first time come alive in reverse. The path feels different underfoot, and with the mental boost of being “on the way back,” many runners find a second wind.

The final climb back to Land’s End is a satisfying one. Whether you’re out for a strong effort or a scenic cruise, the sense of achievement at the finish is real.

Penrose Estate 10K Trail Loop – A Woodland and Coastal Running Gem in Cornwall

If you're looking for a trail run that combines tranquil woodland paths, peaceful lake views, and a taste of Cornish coastline, the Penrose Estate 10K loop is the perfect choice. This circular route is a firm favourite on our Cornwall Trail Running Retreats — offering a gentler but equally stunning alternative to some of the county’s more rugged coastal trails.

Trail Running the Penrose Estate Loop

Set just outside Helston on the south coast of Cornwall, the Penrose Estate is managed by the National Trust and offers a beautifully varied landscape to explore on foot. This 10K loop takes you through ancient woodland, across open parkland, and along the edges of Loe Pool — Cornwall’s largest natural lake — before opening up to glimpses of the coast near Porthleven.

The route is peaceful, well-maintained, and wonderfully scenic, making it ideal for runners who want a more relaxed trail experience without sacrificing beauty.

Distance, Terrain, and Elevation of the Trail Run

  • Distance: Approx. 10 km (6.2 miles)
  • Route: Circular loop
  • Elevation gain: Around 150–200 metres
  • Surface: Firm trails, forest track, lakeside path, and some grassy sections

This route is much gentler than the rugged cliffside trails of the Penwith Peninsula, but still offers a satisfying variety of terrain. It’s runnable almost all year round and suitable for a wide range of trail running abilities.

The Woodland Start – Into the Heart of Penrose

The run begins at the Penrose National Trust car park near Helston and quickly takes you into leafy woodland. The trails here are soft underfoot and lined with mature trees — perfect for easing into the run. As the route meanders deeper into the estate, you’ll enjoy rolling paths that wind through the woods, with dappled light and birdsong accompanying your steps.

This section sets the tone for a peaceful and grounding experience in nature.

Loe Pool Loop – Skirting Cornwall’s Largest Natural Lake

Emerging from the woods, the trail meets the edge of Loe Pool — a beautiful, reed-lined freshwater lake that sits just inland from the sea. The path hugs the water's edge for much of the loop, giving you long, open views across the lake and plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities.

It’s a calming stretch that invites a steady rhythm and a clear mind — ideal for mindful running.

Towards the Coast – Hints of the Sea Near Porthleven

As the loop continues, the trail briefly opens up to more exposed ground with distant views of Mount’s Bay and the coast near Porthleven. On a clear day, the contrast between the inland stillness of Loe Pool and the dynamic energy of the Atlantic beyond is truly special.

Though you don’t run directly on the coast path here, the sea air and wide skies add a fresh dimension to the second half of the route.

Returning Through Parkland and Woodland Trails

The loop closes as you re-enter the woodlands and gently undulate through open parkland and quiet trail corridors back toward the start. There’s a sense of flow in this final stretch — a lovely way to finish a loop that balances movement, nature, and calm.

Whether you run it as a recovery route or at full effort, the Penrose Estate 10K loop offers a satisfying experience with lasting post-run peace.
